🏖️Brittas Bay Beach

seaside-attractions

A long, sandy Blue Flag beach on the east coast of Ireland, popular with families. The gently sloping shore and calm waters make it safe for young children to paddle and swim. During summer (June–August), lifeguards patrol the main bathing area, and there are marked swimming zones.

Facilities include a large car park (pay & display from Easter to September), seasonal toilets, a mobile shop for ice creams and snacks, and a designated dog-free area on the main beach. No playground on the sand, but the wide beach offers plenty of space for digging, ball games, and kite flying.

Practical tips: Arrive early on sunny weekends as parking fills quickly. Bring sun protection and windbreaks, as it can get breezy. Nearby Brittas Bay village has a couple of cafes and a pub. The beach is free to access, only parking costs apply.

Travel tips

  • Arrive early on sunny weekends

Car park fills quickly during good weather. Come early morning to secure a spot and enjoy quieter waters.

  • Pay & display parking (Easter to September)

Parking is charged seasonally. Bring coins or check if card payments are available at the car park.

  • Lifeguards on duty in summer

Swimming is supervised June to August in marked zones. Outside these months, swim at your own risk and watch children closely.

  • Pack sun protection essentials

Bring sunscreen, hats, and UV rash vests. The beach is exposed and can get very breezy, so windbreaks help.

  • Gently sloping shore is safe for toddlers

The gradual gradient makes it ideal for paddling young children, but always supervise closely and use water wings if needed.

  • Bring spare clothes for water play

Pack extra outfits for young children. The beach can be windy and cold even in summer, and kiddies get wet quickly.

  • Seasonal toilets on site

Public toilets are available but seasonal. Check they're open before relying on them, especially outside peak season.

  • Mobile shop for snacks and ice cream

Limited food is available on the beach via a mobile shop. Bring packed lunches and drinks to avoid queues and save money.

  • Dog-free zone for families

A designated dog-free area on the main beach gives families a safe space away from other animals.

  • Calm waters ideal for young swimmers

The sheltered, calm conditions make this a good first beach experience for young children and nervous swimmers.

  • Wide beach offers space for activities

Plenty of room for sandcastle building, digging, ball games, and kite flying without feeling crowded.

  • Bring wind protection for breezy days

The exposed beach can get windy. Windbreaks, pop-up tents, or shelters help keep young children comfortable.

  • Plan for a half or full day visit

Allow 3-4 hours minimum to enjoy the beach properly. Families with young children may find this a full day activity.

  • No play equipment on the sand

The beach has no playground, so bring buckets, spades, and beach toys. Kites and ball games work well on the wide sand.

  • Cafes and pubs in nearby village

Brittas Bay village has a couple of cafes and a pub within walking distance if you want to eat away from the beach.

  • Blue Flag status means good water quality

Blue Flag certification indicates the beach meets high standards for water quality and safety.

  • Beach is free to access

No entry fee—only parking costs apply, making it a budget-friendly family day out.
