🌿Port Meadow

park-gardensnature-reserve

Port Meadow is a large, ancient common land in Oxford, stretching along the River Thames. It offers wide open spaces perfect for walking, cycling, picnicking, and flying kites. Kids can enjoy spotting grazing horses and cattle, paddling in the river (at own risk), and exploring the floodplain meadows. There are no formal playgrounds or cafes, so bring your own entertainment and supplies.

The meadow is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) with diverse wildlife. It's a great spot for nature walks and birdwatching. Free parking is available at the Wolvercote end. Nearby, you can visit the Perch pub for refreshments.

Travel tips

  • Bring your own supplies

There are no cafes or formal facilities on the meadow, so pack a picnic, drinks, and snacks before you arrive.

  • Free parking available

Use the free car park at the Wolvercote end for convenient access to the meadow.

  • River paddling at own risk

The Thames runs through the meadow and children can paddle, but supervise closely and be aware it's at your own risk.

  • Wear appropriate footwear

Bring wellies or sturdy shoes as the meadow can be muddy, especially after rain or during wetter seasons.

  • No formal toilets available

Plan toilet visits carefully as there are no facilities on the meadow itself. Use facilities before arriving or at the Perch pub.

  • Watch for grazing animals

Horses and cattle graze freely on the meadow. Keep children close and teach them not to approach or feed the animals.

  • Perfect for buggies and strollers

The wide open spaces are generally buggy-friendly, though paths may be uneven or muddy in places.

  • Ideal for active play

Bring bikes, scooters, balls, kites, or other play equipment as there are no formal playgrounds to use.

  • Check for flooding in winter

The meadow is a floodplain and can flood during wet weather. Worth checking conditions before visiting in autumn or winter.

  • Great for nature spotting

It's a Site of Special Scientific Interest with diverse wildlife. Bring binoculars for birdwatching and nature exploration.

  • Open space suitable for all ages

The flat, expansive meadow works well for babies, toddlers, and older children to explore at their own pace.

  • Bring sun protection

The open meadow offers little shade, so pack sunscreen, hats, and consider umbrellas for hot days.

  • Nearby pub for adults

The Perch pub is close by if you want refreshments, though you'll need to leave the meadow to visit.
