seaside-attractionsnature-reserve

A beautiful Blue Flag beach on the Mayo coast, Silver Strand is a firm favourite with families. The wide, sandy shore and clean, shallow waters make it a safe spot for paddling and swimming. Children will love building sandcastles, exploring rock pools, and playing on the soft sand.

  • Lifeguards on duty during summer months (June–August)
  • Car park and public toilets nearby
  • Picnic tables and benches along the promenade
  • Gentle slope into the water, ideal for young swimmers
  • Stunning views of Croagh Patrick and Clew Bay

For active families, there are coastal walks in both directions. The beach is also close to the town of Louisburgh, where you can find shops, cafes, and eateries. Parking is free, and the beach is easily accessible by car.

Travel tips

  • Visit during lifeguard season for peace of mind

Lifeguards are on duty June to August. If swimming outside these months, supervise children extra carefully as water conditions can be unpredictable.

  • Arrive early to secure parking and avoid crowds

Parking is free but can fill up during peak summer weekends. Early morning visits mean easier parking and quieter beach for younger children.

  • Gentle slope makes it ideal for toddlers and weak swimmers

The shallow water and gradual slope are perfect for babies learning to paddle. Still supervise constantly, but it's one of the safer beach options for littlest ones.

  • Pack spare clothes and a changing robe

Bring extra layers and a waterproof changing robe if possible. Getting wet on a breezy coast can leave children cold quickly, especially babies and toddlers.

  • Public toilets are nearby but check facilities before arriving

Toilets are available close to the beach. Worth ringing ahead or checking online to confirm opening times and whether baby changing facilities are available.

  • Bring sun protection—coastal winds can hide strong UV

Even on cloudy days, sun exposure is strong by the coast. Pack high SPF sunscreen, hats, and consider UV-protective clothing for babies and sensitive skin.

  • Bring a picnic rather than relying on beach shops

Pack lunch and snacks. Picnic tables are provided along the promenade, and Louisburgh town is nearby but not immediately on the beach.

  • Rock pools are brilliant for older children but supervise toddlers

Rock pooling is a highlight for kids aged 5+. Keep very young children away from deeper pools and slippery rocks, or let older siblings explore whilst you supervise from nearby.

  • Ideal for a half or full-day beach visit

Plan for at least 3–4 hours so children have time to build sandcastles, paddle, and explore without feeling rushed. Babies and toddlers may need rest breaks.

  • Coastal walks both directions are manageable with buggies

Walks are available along the coast both ways. Check surface conditions beforehand—sandy paths may be harder for buggy wheels than promenade sections.

  • Blue Flag status means consistently good water quality

Blue Flag designation means regular water testing and monitoring. This is reassuring for families with young children who may inadvertently swallow seawater whilst learning to swim

  • Check wind and tide times before visiting

Atlantic coast weather changes quickly. Windy conditions can make it cold for young children. Low tide reveals more rock pools; high tide reduces safe paddling space.

  • Soft sand is easier on little legs than shingle beaches

The sandy shore means comfortable barefoot walking for toddlers and less painful if children run around without shoes. Brings sandcastle-building joy.

  • Louisburgh shops nearby for forgotten items

Close to town means you can nip to shops if you forget nappies, sunscreen, or snacks. Useful safety net for family trips.

  • Arrive with expectations for a sensory beach day

A busy summer beach brings crowds, noise, and sensory input. If your child dislikes noise, visit early morning or shoulder season. Quieter for babies too.
