🏡The Swiss Cottage

historic-house-gardens

The Swiss Cottage is a fairytale-like early 19th-century ornamental cottage (cottage orné) built around 1810 by Richard Butler, 1st Earl of Glengall, to a design by the famous Regency architect John Nash. This whimsical Alpine-style retreat with its thatched roof, timber verandas, and rose-covered walls was used by the aristocratic Butler family for picnics, hunting parties, and entertaining guests—never as a residence.

Inside, visitors discover a graceful spiral staircase, elegantly decorated rooms, and original Parisian wallpaper from the early 1800s. Access is by guided tour only (30-45 minutes, maximum 10 people, first-come first-served). The cottage sits in enchanting woodland gardens along the River Suir, and families can walk the scenic 2km Coronation Walk from Cahir Castle—a path lined with fairy doors that kids love spotting.

  • Best for ages 6+ who can manage steep steps and appreciate the history
  • Note: The cottage involves steep steps and a spiral staircase, limiting access for very young children and those with mobility issues
  • No café on-site, but toilets available and lovely picnic spots in the grounds
  • The riverside walk takes 30-45 minutes and can be muddy in wet weather—wear sturdy shoes
  • Exterior and gardens are free to explore; tours required for interior

Practical tip: Arrive early in summer as tours are limited to 10 people and can fill quickly. Consider combining with nearby Cahir Castle for a full heritage day out.
